Protect Our Rivers License Plate Deadline - June 2018

From our friends at Colorado Trout Unlimited:

Time is running out! If you have not acquired your exclusive “Protect Our Rivers” Colorado license plate, then you need to now! We have a quota to meet before the end of June 2018 or the plates will cease to exist! Please help us keep the messaging for river conservation on the road in Colorado and beyond. If you have already received your certificate and still need to pick up your plates, you have to do it before the deadline of June 2018.

To get the plate please click the “Tickets” URL and after a one-time $25 donation, you will receive your certificate to take to your County Clerk to get your specialized plates. Note: In Colorado you will have to pay a one-time only $50 fee to get the specialized plate but after that, the plates are yours forever!

2017 Annual Meeting with Josh Duplechian and Russ Schnitzer

2017 Annual Meeting with Josh Duplechian and Russ Schnitzer

We had a fantastic annual member meeting on December 6th. Thanks to all that attended. FHTU was privileged to have a private, exclusive screening of the film, A River's Reckoning. The film chronicles a Colorado ranching family's relationship and stewardship of the upper Colorado River, both in drought years and years of plenty. The film will premiere at the 2018 Wild and Scenic Film Festival. The filmmakers, Josh (TU national) and Russ were on hand to share with us the inspiration behind the film, the conservation success that this family has catalyzed in the upper Colorado basin, and the broader conversation that the film is meant to foster. We hope to see A River's Reckoning again at the 5 Point Film Festival, so please spread the word.

Native Cutthroat Protection Efforts Underway in the Roaring Fork Valley

Native Cutthroat Protection Efforts Underway in the Roaring Fork Valley

In 1937, Colorado's native greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias) was believed to be extinct. Many attribute the greenback's decline to pollution, habitat loss, and predation as a result of intensifying front-range settlement during the late-1800s and the turn of the century. Importantly, in 1873, an old homesteader named Joseph C. Jones set out to strike it rich by developing a hotel and restaurant along Bear Creek (a tributary of the Arkansas River) in hopes of alluring tired travelers hiking a newly completed trail to and from the summit of Pike's Peak. Unknowingly, Jones would become an accidental conservationist.

The Ferdinand Hayden Chapter will be partnering with a number of local organizations this Saturday, May 6th to work on a widely used public boat ramp in Carbondale. We invite you and your family to join us for a half day of work and lunch along the Roaring Fork River. The current work plan involves installing raft tie ups, trail work, and trimming overgrown vegetation. Come get to know your fellow FHTU members and neighbors at this family-friendly event hosted by our friends at Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers and the Roaring Fork Conservancy.
